evaluation

Introduction to your assignment - explain the genre Film Noir, history, time period, clothing etc.)       Your research – what images inspired your poster/DVD shots and why? They inspired me because it gave me idea of what to do for my poster and  what  tools  to  use  in Photoshop, so I  can recreate the images. Some of them were not related to the unit we were set to do and it was kind of hard to recreate and to relate to noir.
Characteristics of film noir photography lighting – (detail the three-light technique)The 3 three light techniques are key light, which is  the main light, fill light that you use to fill in the shadows of the photo onto your object or model, and back light, which is also called hair light. Back light is a brightness of light source around the surrounding area.
What were your ideas? Detail your four photo-shoots at home and at college.
I did two shoots at home and college. The home photography was the city that I took outside of college. I took 10 shots from different angles, so I can decide which photo I should edit, and then I put them on a contact sheet (newbie). I have taken pictures of hands as I was trying to create the shape of a gun that I can use in my montage poster. I thought of this idea because we weren’t allowed to bring guns or knives into college, so I thought I'd do it at home (outside).
In the college one I  took a  shot of light  from the  redhead, because  the weather was cloudy and there wasn’t any sun, as it was autumn and very cold, so I  thought a redhead would be similar to the sunlight and good  to use  into my montage poster.
Photography. What did you have to take into account, i.e., location, times, props, models and equipment? The location was basically outside of college and in the college class room (E101). I  didn’t  need that many props  to use,  I only needed a hat and redhead  for  my poster montage. I only used one model for the hand, but everything else was my own. The equipment I used were a redhead (for the sun), camera to take picture of my objects and models, and a tripod to hold the camera.
Contact sheet examples for all your test shots detailing the camera settings used
I used aperture (59F) storytelling onto the 9 images, but the last one I think I did it on the ISO 300. As the depth of was blurring out, I took different angles of the city, so I can chose which photo I can use to edit on in Photoshop. I used normal white balance on the images. In my second contact sheet I took pictures of a redhead. I'd say some of the images were ISO 100 and mid setting aperture, as some were grainy and some had low light. I didn’t think about using the white balance, that is why it's too bright. My third contact sheet is the hands, as I used white balance to get the right light source for the image. It was on program and it looks more like ISO100-400, aperture shutter speed very fast or very slow.
(one sheet x10 images per shoot).
Editing processes/techniques used (include screen shots) In Photoshop I’ve used the pen tool to cut out bits I need in my photos. I then used the curves and levels to get the right fitting on my image. I have used the ghost technique on the sun which I have learned from Owen's lesson so I decide to use it and show what I have learnt. I have used gradient for the background, as I didn’t want a plain poster. I have used flare for the movie Primer effect, but it kind of faded into the gradient image.
Examples of your four final photographs (one from each shoot)
The first one I liked a lot because it's really detailed and appropriate for my noir film unit and it was really easy to edit it in Photoshop. The second image is the redhead and it was a difficult one as it was hard to edit in Photoshop and hard to deal with the light of the red head, due to how bright the lights is and how to take down the contrast of the image. The third image was alright. It was hard find a location to take the image, as it can be too bright to take the image. The fourth image I didn’t take the photo, so I can’t say too much about this. It was okay but the image of my friend's hat was hard to take, as it was too dark and hard to edit around.
A4 portrait poster and DVD artwork.  What would you do differently next time and what did you learn from your first assignment? I would plan out  more probably and  follow my proposal better, not  over-think my idea and slow down a bit, so I don’t have to  rush my work through. I have learnt more about the white balance and use of the camera. I have also learnt where I can book out a camera. I have learnt new Photoshop skills that I didn’t use in my last unit.
In your opinion, does your final image, poster and cover meet the assignment brief? Explain why. I through it was kind of rushed through, as I couldn’t keep up much. I enjoyed doing  the  Photoshop stuff, but  didn’t enjoy the proposal and the  taking of the  images that much, because  it was kind of hard to get the right portion of  the image. I think I’m in the middle, as I think half  the  brief is  good and half it bad, as I kind  of  struggled  more on  this unit than  on the last  unit.

Film Noir is based around the 1940-1980s time area, where they all wear suits, hats, & old dresses. It all started in the 1940s, when they banned alcohol and they used underground sales to sell their beer, wines and other alcoholic drinks. There was some violent stuff like gun crimes and murder and possibly rape.

UAL TEST

Today we took picture from outside of college and  used objects we have got .I will be editing them into Photoshop and use  the tools in Photoshop like Curves and level,I might use  desartuter ,as i could use  it  make it dull and old.I don't think i done well,as I struggled a bit and I don't think  I passed ,because  the  picture are kind not  right

I first created a landscape for the bottom of my poster and game cover. I  have used the curves and levels to get my background into the right position and right depth of image. I used the light tool to make the sky more effective and to make the city lights  reflect. I then used the redhead image to create the sun and I have used the blur tool and opacity to make the sun really misty. I was going to put the hands in the banner, but I have removed them  from the image to make it more aimed at the city.

I then created an A4 sheet and use the gradient tool to create the background, because if used the blank screen  would look dull and not effective toward the audience. I then added my banner into the bottom screen.

I added the hand and hat into the poster .I have used the pen tool to select the objects in the images ,as but  i struggled with the hat, as it was kind of curved and hard to use the pen tool around.

Finally my poster and game cover. The pegi and the writing (not the title or date) was from google images, but the rest I created in Photoshop and I like the gaming poster more then the poster, because  I found the poster kind of plain, so I hope I did well on my poster and game cover.

My Final Poster and game design

Memory check week 6

1.Look at the following four photographs and describe the rules of composition they adhere to and explain the message (meaning)
  behind the images.

picture 1 (the flags)

The image shows flags and it is aimed at the people in the image. Mid shot range with a cropped image with a (shallow or wide?) depth of field.

Image 2 (bright)
It is a symmetrical image, aimed at the Olympics event, as it is reflected  onto London bridge .The colour of the image makes it stand-out, as the rest are out of focus. Large aperture and shallow depth of flied.

Image 3:
It uses rule of thirds, it is  focused onto to the sand castle because the image was taken as a shallow depth of field. The photographer used it because they wanted to point the focus on the sand castle on the image.

Image 4:

The image is in black and white, and looks like it was taken in the 1950s, because of the clothes they are wearing and the way they sitting round the table. It is a cropped image .They are having a dinner or family meeting, because they are sat round the table.

All the images are around a British theme, because of the flags and there is also an Olympics . I knew some of the images straight away.

2. Put the below apertures in order, starting with the one that will produce the shallowest depth of field.
A:F1.8
B:f4
C:f8
D:f16

3. If the shutter speed is 1/60th of a second and the ISO is doubled from 100 to 200 what will the shutter speed be increased to?
1/120th d)
5. You are taking a landscape shot. What aperture value would you use to gain the maximum depth of field?
F22

contact sheet

I have taken photos of the city. Some of the images are blurry and the angle  is different. So I picked the 6th picture, because it looks  nice and will be able to edit it.

2nd contact sheet
 p110025-p110632

I like the shoot I have taken, but some photos are off the wrong angle of the redhead light source. I chose the 4th, because it looks more like a sun.

Contact sheet 3
I have taken shots of a hand. The first photo was in the class room and it was too light to take the picture, so I  changed the locations of my images.

Contact sheet 3

The hats were hard to get right -  especially the shade onto the hat, as it was kind of dark, but I tried to get good image from it .

memory check

1.       Film Noir can be a difficult/technical subject to photograph.

·         The shutter speed: The picture will be bluer because it is  a low light, It holds it open, as it is a slow shutter speed.
·         The ISO : The higher the iso the more grain  is there.
·         Aperture : The low light cause the  largest .

2.       Name the three main light sources used in Film Noir (think back to the video we watched)
·         Key light :  it is main light

propsol ( still finshing and to be checked)

Produce a proposal detailing exactly what your ideas are?

1st shot : (outside)  I need to take a picture of the city, because it will go well with my idea. I will take it from a car park, because you get a good view from the car park's rooftop . I will then edit  the city  into Photoshop, by using the curve tool and levels tool, so that I can get the darkness onto the city and make it more  "noir" like.

2ND shot :(home)  I  will take a picture of someones hat  as it looks like a mafia type of hat and more stylish to wear. I will use Photoshop to cut around the hat, as I don't need the full length of the body. I will put it with my 1st shot .

3rd shot: (college)  I 'm going to take a picture of a red head, because a red head is more of a sun shape and it fits into the city more, as the light of  the red head is more similar of a sun..
4th shot :(college) I will be taking a shot of someone's hand: they can make a gun shape  out of their hands, because we are not allowed to bring weapons into college.

The photography style you will recreate?
I'm going to combine all my research into one picture, because it is a good idea and it will be different, but  will related to my secondary research.

1st shot : I used the aperture onto the city so i can tell story on the city. I will probably edit the effects into Photoshop, as I can make it darker. If I can't use the aperture due to the weather, I  used the iSO to bring depth of filed, towards the city's landscape.

2nd shot  I used the Shutter speed,The very sloe shutter speed with a tripod and white balance  , as I  don't need that much light on the hat or that much depth, as I only need the hat, not the head shot.

3rd: I used  the aperture Isolation
, as  I don't need much light and only need the light on the redhead, as it makes my other objects go with my theme.

4th:  I think I used the ISO so I can use Artificial light and some grain. I be able to edit it onto my Model hand, as I want the full hand in my shot  and some arms.  It be easier to cut out the hand.

What kind of props I will be using?

1st :  I would need a tripod and camera.
2-:I would ask someone in the class to bring the hat,  and ask someone  to take a picture of me wearing the hat.
3rd   I will either take a picture of the sun, or I would use a red head to recreate the sun . If I can't use a red head  then I will have to use  another light source, like a lamp, moon ( if there is one ) or any other .
4-: I would ask someone at home if I can a take picture of their hands, making a toy gun shape, while I take the picture. So I only need a model on this shot.

What location will I be going to?
1 st:  I would go to nearby  car park and take picture of  the city, as I need a city to go with my montage. I will need some assistance getting the tripod and camera up steps towards the city. The location is on the outskirts of college, not near the collage building.

2-:I would do this  in college,  as I don't own a hat and it would be easier to give it back to the owner afterwards. I would also need to ask the owners permission.

3-: I would do it at college, as I wouldn't be able to take a redhead home ,as it is too heavy to carry and I might break it.

4;- I would take picture of the hands at home, I would use my phone or borrow a camera from college to do this.

Who are my models?
1:- I would need an assistant  from my college class, but I don't need a model for this photo, as I only need   Nottingham city for this, and the only models are people driving by.

2-:I would be the model for the hat and someone in class will take the picture of me wearing the hat. I would pose in different positions wearing the hat and at different angles, so it be easier for me to edit the object into Photoshop.
3-: As with the first image. I would need assistance again to keep an eye on the red head, as well as the right  balance for the shot  of the redhead and to get some help putting the redhead and tripod away.

4-:  I would use a  friend or family member for this, as I need to take the images,so I know what kind of style I can take and to use it in  my montage for my noir poster. They will either do a single or doubled handed gun. I thought I would do it  this way as it will be  safer than using a real life gun.
